I've always liked the idea of using a dragon in an RPG setting. I mean, an entire franchise has been built around a game system that uses the scaly beasts in its name. But for many GM's the idea of pitting their low-level PC's against a dragon could be a recipe for a Total Party Kill (TPK).
Introduce Nikrat. This pic may be hard to discern, but hopefully with my description you'll see what I meant to accomplish.
Nikrat is an adolescent dragon who like other dragons had plans to be great, powerful, and owner of a fantastic hoard. Setting out Nikrat headed for the small town of New Darlbrooke (So named for a rather large accident over a century ago that destroyed 'Old' Darlbrooke.), a hub for magic-users of all kinds.
Nikrat had hoped to lay siege to the town, drive away all of it's magical occupants, and claim the myriad of enchanted treasures for himself thus making quite a strong deposit in his new hoard.
However the inexperienced dragon bit off more that he could chew
and was quickly defeated by New Darlbrooke's small army of wizards. Though
powerful, the wizards weren't evil and instead of destroying the dragon decided
to entrap and ultimately humiliate him.
Magnon a powerful elder wizard ultimately came up with the means
of disposing Nikrat. With the help of four other wizards, Magnon was able
to cast a powerful spell turning the dragon into a monolith of stone.
Nikrat now stands at the center of Magnon's elaborate garden, a
silent (yet still sentient) decoration.
Recently the five members of wizards that had placed the spell on Nikrat have started to turn up dead. Witnesses have said small-shadowy figures had been seen fleeing the scene of the crimes. Now only two members remain alive and while the remaining wizards haven't made a connection to the deaths of their comrades and the trapped dragon, there have been major ramifications on the spell cast on Nikrat.
